I think part of it might be Chiwetel Ejiofor's character constantly talking about everything going on off screen and the "battle for your life" every couple of seconds. I just never liked his character. Plus the super white bald Sorcerer Supreme is an odd choice

Synopsis

After a car accident, Doctor Strange looks for ways to heal himself so he can continue to practice medicine. This leads him to the far east and places in smack in the middle of a war of the mystic arts.

Review

Reading the synopsis of this movie makes me think of Bulletproof Monk which is not a good thing. That movie is a travesty, where this one isn't. There is a lot of wit in this and it plays well, especially when trying to present an idea of mystical actions and a world beyond our own. I know comic book readers have no issue with that, but for people watching the movies alone, it might be harder to digest. The comedy helps with that.

Benedict Cumberbatch is amazing in this. His American accent is really nice and such a drastic change from his normal voice which you get in The Imitation Game. That might have been the movie that made me learn who he was and he has never disappointed. Rachel McAdams is a great counter piece to him and they play well together on the screen.

From a story perspective, I do feel it is a bit rushed. I don't remember feeling like that when I first watched it, but I did this time. I can't remember specifically and am not sure what the comics say about the character in general.

My Rating

I like Cumberbatch a lot. I think he brings a lot of grounding to the movie and the entire Marvel Phase 3. Which is more about his acting than the character. Either way, he is easily the stand out in this movie and plays the comedy really well. For sure one of my favorite MCU movies. I am giving this an 8.

Parental Rating

Limited language, no sex, and the violence is either in the Astral world or in the background. Wait, I take that back, they behead a guy in the opening. So decent amount of violence, but all under the PG-13 realm. I can't see a rule reason for my dad to not approve, but I am unsure of the content for him. I'm going to say no because I don't think he cares for Witches. Mom is also out, as there is nothing really about family. Rejected by both.
