Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy

Synopsis

A dramatization of the arrest and trial of the serial killer, John Wayne Gacy. This is mainly from the perspective of the police and victim's families.

Review

We have to start this off with saying that this is a dramatization of the events that happened with John Wayne Gacy. That means that there is a forced perspective in what is expressed about the man. What I do want to applaud though is that they never show anything explicit. There are cuts to black, time jumps, and other things like this for events that could create trauma, or extend the show more than needed like the execution and trial.

Gabriel Luna, who I first saw in The Last of Us, is a powerhouse on this show. I really enjoyed watching his interactions with Michael Chernus. Actually, he does an outstanding job playing this super creepy and manipulative person. I am curious what kind of character research he did. James Badge Dale from 13 Hours is good, but I think this isn't as good of a performance.

How they did the age of the show, i.e., the old cars, decor, style in the house, etc. is so well done. I am honestly not sure how they do it so well 50 years later or so. It really helps you feel what how things happened. I do feel there are some modern language patterns that make no sense and sound like what I hear in the world or say myself.

My Rating

This show was compelling. My wife and I slammed this show just really enjoying the performances. This entire story is absolutely crazy and just like the story of Dahmer, you just become sad for how the police handled things during the investigation and after. Victims and their families being left out in the cold. I am giving this an 8.

Parental Rating

An immense amount of sexual conversations and language. There are conversations about extreme violence as well. More than enough reason for both of them to be out. Rejected by Mom and Dad.
