Brief Review
This book was very interesting from just a computer science perspective. In my job, I use open source intelligence to find different things and using social media to find murders is very intriguing. Makes complete sense a couple years ago, but I am curious about the seccess rate these days with the changes in the algorithms.

In-Depth Review
This was a really interesting book. Having read a book about the Golden State killer investigation years ago by the police office mentioned in this book, I had no idea who the players really were. Learning that this guy picked up the pieces from another civilian researcher and had helped with finding other murderers was good.
The writing and story telling were my favorite part. He does a great job of explaining the events that are happening, and what the hurdles he faced were. I can only imagine trying to deal with the cops from dozens if not hundreds of different precincts. The hoops to jump through, and the temperaments must have made it more than a headache.
One of the things I got frustrated with him throwing his political views in there. In all the cases he described, none of the murder suspects that he helped look for had ever used a gun as part of their MO. However, a couple of times he goes on a diatribe about how guns are the danger, and they need to be removed, but in the same breath he said buy one if he felt like he needed it. These sentences really had no point to the book.
Rating
There is a lot of great storytelling in this book. The individual cases are compelling and really make for the perfect examples of how social media can be used for something other than telling us about having a Dr. Pepper, liked in Easy A. It is a book I think a lot of people would enjoy reading. I am giving this an 8.
