The Book in 1 Sentence

Brief Review
This book doesn't do a good job of explaining the connection in the series, but is an entertaining story about Kovatch on another adventure. The actions scenes are well described, but the story doesn't matter. It feels inconsequential at best. Other than being off planet in a different sleeve, the world isn't any different place than when it started for the most part.
Why I Read this book
Continuing the series.
In-Depth Review (Favorite Quotes)
This book doesn't talk much if at all about the previous book to the point that I am not sure where in the timeline it fits. The author says that it is about 30 years later, but I never felt like the previous story had any value. The main reason I feel like it is before, is because Kovatch has a lot of Quellist mentalities that he believes in rather than it being something from old days.
I really enjoyed the action scenes. The descriptions of the futuristic weapons, the nanotubes, and just the event in virtual are really a lot of fun. I also appreciate the events that take place on the Martian ship, but I don't want to give that away. What I will say is that I am still confused as to what happened overall in the ship, both times for the archeologist. I am unable to wrap my head around it, but I am not sure if that is a writing issue or just a "Me" issue.
I always find the sex scenes in these books to be dumb as far as plot. There to lengthen the story or to make it feel like something more is going on, but this one really felt stupid. There is no continued relationship with it and it just was there. Both times.
Rating
Overall, I enjoyed the book, but at no time was I excited to finish it. It was a decent story with the plot being a little lack luster, and being saved by great action scenes. I think I mentioned in Altered Carbon that I was excited to continue the series with the cool technology, but other than virtual, there isn't a lot of that cool cyberpunk vibe. There are in the middle of nowhere. This made me not want to continue the series, but since there is only 1 left, I will. This is a 6 for me. The action scene provide a shaky stability that the rest can't support.
