Barbarian

This movie was recommended to me and honestly, I had no idea what it was about. I knew it was Zach Cregger, and I find his movies to be very lack luster for endings, and this one isn't much different. Better, but not much different. I really hope his new Resident Evil movie is good.

So I really like Georgina Campbell in this. I am not sure if I have seen here in a movie before, but she was incredible. Her dynamic with Bill Skarsgard was awesome. Speaking of him, they did a great job of not showing how tall he was. I think there was only one scene where you really got a good idea and that was when he went into the basement. Him crawling on the ground was for sure the creepiest part. Jake Long does a great job playing this selfish and arrogant dude. It really brought me back to him in Jeepers Creepers.

The story itself feels unfinished. We get this huge setup, but no payoff. The thing that is chasing them isn't what I would call the "Barbarian" but after watching Weapons maybe Cregger was being pedantic. The person who was the real "Barbarian" we get a scene or two with and honestly not much else. I think that we needed more understanding of his evil doing.

My Rating

I enjoyed this movie. It was interesting and something I think we have all thought about for basements. Something any homeowner has thought about when talking about the "What ifs" of owning a home, well perhaps it just me that wants to connect 2 homes next to each other underground. The cast is the best part. They do a great job for such a small story. I'm giving this a 7.

Parental Rating

There is an incredible amount of language. The violence is also just dripping from this movie in a more "Oh god, that happened" rather than it being on-screen itself. Between that and the nude woman, I can easily say that this is rejected by both.
