Bad Boys
Synopsis

Review
This is a Will Smith Classic. I read his book, Will (before I was doing reviews, so this link will not work, but it is on my 2025 reread list), watched him in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and in general have really enjoyed his acting. This movie is where I think it started for me. Watching it when it came on USA or TBS back in the day and I loved it. It is funny enough that even as a younger kid, while I didn't catch the jokes, I understood the wittiness.
Will and Martin are a great paring, which is why in 2024 we got a new Bad Boys movie that I am looking forward to watching. This isn't Oscar worthy, I mean it is an early Michael Bay, but it is very enjoyable to watch. They do a great job of just working off of each other and pushing the envelope of friendship which from my experience is pretty on par. As for the rest of the cast, I am not a fan of Lisa Boyle (And having finished watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine recently, I can only picture her being a weird offshoot of Charles Boyle in the show). I find her acting to be consistently one dimensional even when she is supposedly attempting to seduce Martin. Her tone never really leaves the sarcastic lazy valley girl. Also, just her complete disregard of her life and other people's property makes no sense when she was apologetic to her friend about not being able to cook in the beginning.
The action, while VERY 90s, is extremely fun. Dive shooting, fast driving, and explosions make this the epitome of an action film from then and now. You can't really go wrong with any of it (I am intentionally ignoring the never reloading since this was pre John Wick Series).
My Rating
IMDB gives this a 6.8 and I think that is a bit low. The chemistry between Martin and Will is enjoyable, relatable, and outright funny. The action is good. I really enjoyed this on the plane enough that I almost started Bad Boys II knowing I wouldn't finish it before landing. I am giving this an 8.
Parental Rating
This is rated "R" and would still be rated "R" today speaking that it is a 30 year old movie. There is nudity, drugs, sex, sexual conversations, and lots of language. My dad hates these movies for that reason. "They just saw 'God Damn' too much. It isn't needed". My mom has never watched this and I don't think she ever would. Rejected by both.
