Assassin's Creed

This is where this game stands above most other games. The story is full of a simple premise, but filled with a history that pulls you in. I am one of the few people that think that the modern day is just as important as the historical period in the game and that is fine.

Overly Dramatic Review in One Sentence

One of the best games you'll ever play, but will be very annoyed at the movement and simplistic fighting.

Gameplay

YOU MUST INSTALL MODS ON PC. Specifically, the Assassin's Creed Remastered (Community Edition) mod (Which is really 4 mods in 1) and the Assassin's Creed Lag Fix. Without these, this game is completely unplayable. The lag and frame skips are horrendous, however, this game came out in 2007. It is almost 20 years old, and we know that "Ubisoft ain't gonna fix shit that old." They barely fix things that came out last week.

I have played this game probably 4 or 5 times. Replaying it each time a new game came out after Assassin's Creed II. However, this is the first time I've played on PC and I did nothing extra. The bare minimum from a gameplay or story experience.

The parkour was awesome for the time, but good grief is it hard to play now. I forgot about all the straight on movement when you parkour. It isn't terrible, but it does take some getting used to and once you do, you can see the building block that it created.

The fighting is rough. Just from a registration of button pushes really makes some required counter kill fighting style really long-winded and boring in today's standard. The other issue is that the different weapons don't really have any variation. There is a short sword that allows you to throw knives, but that is the only benefit.

The last thing I will say about the game play is some missions is that the guards have some weird identification/lines of sight. It isn't all the time, but there are some times when the buildings and the height of you/the guard makes no differences. I've found that I need to have at least 2 walls between me and the chaser for them to not see me. I know this game is 20 years old, so it is expected to a point.

All of this aside, this game is still fun to play. The clunkiness makes the movement more intentional, the fighting more methodical, and the running just annoying. I do like the Assassin's Bureau being entered from the roof.

Graphics and Sound

For the sounds, some are classics at this point. The music is one of my favorite music, and it really comes to a peak in Assassin's Creed III. The twick of the hidden blade is just engrained in my mind.

The graphics have not held up. I'm sorry, but even with all the mods it doesn't look good. I think even back then it didn't good, but it was a style choice from what I remember.

Story and Characters

This is where this game stands above most other games. The story is full of a simple premise, but filled with a history that pulls you in. I am one of the few people that think that the modern day is just as important as the historical period in the game and that is fine. At least in this game most people agree with me.

In this game I really think that the modern day characters are outstanding. The internal struggle for the assassin's and then the science that is working to be identified. I have always felt that the Abstergo people in the modern day were more interested in the science in this game that they actually believed in the mission of the "Templars."

Actually, I should stay there. This whole assassin's vs. Templars is a quasi-real fight. It is so built into the history of the Crusades which if you have read some of my early reviews, you'd know that that is one of my favorite parts of history; reading books like Jack Whyte's Templar series. This being pushed throughout time is such a smart play.

My Rating

I think the Assassin's Creed Series is one of the most significant game series in history. I think it allowed other companies to see what a game story could be, as well as gameplay. I meant the video trailer that plays is so good and iconic. 20 years later and I still enjoyed this game. The PC version doesn't have achievements so that is why I was able to push through the story line real quick. This is the ultimate "Get this Game."

As a side note, playing a game without achievements is a weird experience. That small little noise and icon popping up makes the movement through the game actually have weight. For me. Something small, but I like it.

Parental Rating

This entire game is about killing people. Also up close and personal. There is blood all over the place and some conversations about torture. Actually I just remembered a scene where they break a dudes legs. Not a chance they would like this game.
