Synopsis

A series of alien ships arrive across Earth requiring governments to work quickly to figure out what they want from humans. The USA calls upon a linguist and a physicist to work together to understand the alien language.

Review

First off, we have to talk about how underrated and under the radar this movie went. I really began to enjoy Denis Villeneuve's movies after this and that is why I decided to rewatch this after watching Dune Part One.

We also need to talk about how a movie in the US, finally puts aliens NOT in New York/Los Angelas/D.C. or just the US. The fact that the aliens landed everywhere creates a really nice plot point about how humans would still fight each other about how to solve a world problem. Speaking that this movie takes place in Montana, it really does show a beautiful place that I thin about moving to from time to time.

I am not a huge Amy Adams fan, but she and Jeremy Renner do an outstanding job working together and this is for sure my favorite movie with her in it. The entire cast is actually really well done. There are some extras that play a larger story part that I can see and understand their motivations.

I have no issues with the story at all. There is a little bit of time travel in this, but it isn't they way you are expecting and it isn't just shoved down your throat and you are expected to understand it. It is explained to you throughout the movie as it fills the plot.

My Rating

This is one of my favorite movies. Probably my favorite movie about aliens. You'd expect this movie to be a 10 with that kind of statement, but it really isn't. This is an 8. The story is great, the acting is really good and honestly, it is just an enjoyable movie. What hurts it is that you 100% have to pay attention and the pacing can get a bit slow during the times of major revelations. It is a solid movie, but isn't perfect. This is an 8.

Parental Rating

No harsh language, no sex, and most of the violence is off screen or in the background where you can't see very much. This is a movie they would both enjoy and I think I have heard them talk about it. I am going to say approved by both.
