Annabelle Creation
There are some solid scenes that will make your skin crawl if you are not careful, but mostly, you should be applauding since they ALL deal with young cast members. The kids in this movie do an outstanding amount of work, while the adults kind of just coast.
Synopsis
After the death of their daughter, a doll-maker and his wife invite a nun and her orphan charges to live at the house. What they don't tell them though is that there is something else in the house.
Review
This is for sure a modern day horror movie. More full of jump scares versus that a lingering sense of something happening. That isn't to say that these jump scares aren't well done. Even seeing them coming, you still get the jump like the dude in this video below.
There are some solid scenes that will make your skin crawl if you are not careful, but mostly, you should be applauding since they ALL deal with young cast members. The kids in this movie do an outstanding amount of work, while the adults kind of just coast. Even the teenagers could look at them and take stock of how good they are. There are a couple scenes that I would love to see the non-CGI version to see how much of it was the kids because I think it is mostly them.
This is the first Annabelle movie I have watched, so I know that there is for sure some creepiness that I am missing. However, as a standalone movie, it still was good. The story holds up for a supernatural demon movie. The characters play there part of being dumb or lucky. The CGI is VERY well done and I enjoyed watching it.
My Rating
If you remember/watched the 2024 Episode 4 - Muther Knows Best Unpacking Aliens’ Influence on Sci-Fi and Horror podcast, you'll know that Sam and I had a conversation about what was scary in a movie. He and I watched Nosferatu together as well and that had a different set of creep than this did, as do the Alien movies or Halloween (1978). I prefer these to Halloween (1978) as a scary factor, but that also comes with growing up believing that demons exist and want to kill me. So that means that there is an after movie creep factor to it, but it isn't as strong as it would have been back in the day. I enjoyed watching this mainly for the cast. The story is elementary, but the series has something around 10 movies in it now since The Nun and The Nun II are part of it as well. It is the way they blend together that makes it more interesting. For this movie alone, I am giving it a 6. The cast and the jump scenes are good, but there is a lot that is just written away as the audience is dumb.
Parental Rating
This entire series is out. Rules be damned, pun intended, for these movies. Rejected by both due to the demonic content.
