American Assassin

Synopsis

After the death of his Fiancée during a random terrorist attack, Mitch trains himself to take them out, but gets caught up a CIA mission to stop a nuclear attack.

Review

The beginning of this movie is honestly one of the roughest to watch as it just hits my heart. It's heavy. Starting with this loving scene and then in seconds… decimation.

This movie was in the height of the MMA taking over the world. There is a ton of MMA moves that typically only work in the Octagon and not in a combat setting, but against the uninitiated? With that, they were still fun to watch. Taylor Kitsch, who was in The Terminal List, is very smooth in this and probably set him up for things like that and Lone Survivor. I have a hard time seeing Michael Keaton as the badass he is supposed to play. He just grits his teeth a lot.

The story is pretty good. Some of the "prep" scenes are questionable and make Rapp out to be a terrible human being rather than a cool guy. I especially have an issue with the range scene. That type of activity is very much frown upon by EVERYONE.

My Rating

I remember watching this in theaters and that opening scene sits with me as the most memorable scenes of all time. The movie as a whole is entertaining which is what I want out of a movie for sure. The boat fight scene is really fun. It just isn't perfect or anywhere close to the best movie. It is a 7.

Parental Rating

Lots of violence including a scene or two of torture with a fingernail coming off. For that last part alone, Mom is out. There is a decent amount of language as well to include the forbidden one, "God Damn." I think that for that reason alone, Dad is out as well. I think that my Dad has watched it and enjoyed it, but complained about the language. We are going to say Rejected by both.
