Synopsis

After the invasion of an alien species that is attracted to sound, a family works to survive normal every day life.

Review

John is incredible in his direction. For a very unique film in the silence of it, you get so much. I don't even think there is music other than a couple scenes where the characters are listening to music. From a sound design perspective it is incredible how this pulls you into the movie, but at the same time, how this sets you up for jumping out of your skin.

The story is outstanding. I know people ask questions like "Why are they having kids?" but that comes from a place of complete ignorance of human genetics, evolution, and honest human nature. But think it through, the world can't end. Humans will fight and thrive. That is what this story is telling and showing. What the world has come to. How people are trying to move on. How others have given up. How to communicate. The fact that they had a deaf child before this happened probably allowed them to thrive where others crashed and burned quickly.

The cast is outstanding. I have heard stories that John made sure that the case and crew all learned sign language so they could communicate correctly Millicent Simmonds. Now that is an actress I look forward to seeing in future items. The way she, John, and Emily worked together to tell a beautiful story is what I love about this movie.

My Rating

I don't understand the hate of this movie. Hate is the wrong word, but people like to bash it, but it is incredible. There is a beautiful world that was built and raises so many questions about what caused the aliens to be that way. I look forward to this world expanding. This is a 9 for the scene with John and Millicent near the end alone.

Parental Rating

I think this could easily be a movie that they would watch. There is almost no language. The movie is all about family and the way kids see the actions of their parents especially after tragedy. Approved by both.
