Synopsis

A group of young kids attempting to make a homemade professional porn movie use a rural farmer's spare home as a location. However, the elderly couple are not full of the traditional southern hospitality.

Review

This is a weird movie. I say that because it falls within a couple different genres and none of them over the other. It is a porn, a thriller, a horror, and a movie attempting to win awards. We have all seen those movies that basically are there to have those artistic shots that will get them some notice. This has a lot of them.

The movie pacing is slow. Lots of setup and shallow storytelling that has lots of implications without a proper presentation of factual information. What I mean is that just like most slasher horror movies from the 80s, you have a lot of build up with a creepy feeling and then gore and grotesqueness without a story that fills in the details that are presented. However, there is a sequel-prequel that came out just after this called Pearl. The fact that you need another movie to explain your first movie, something is wrong.

The acting is all over the place. Either weird good, Jenna Ortega, and terrible, the dude who plays Wayne. I am hesitant to talk much more, because of the over indulgence to the script talking or being about the making of adult films. Not that I have an issue with that, but it feels a cheap ploy to get people to watch the film. Honestly, some of the best lines are about this concept of an adult film being made like a real movie which means “non-perverts can enjoy sex at home” and others that call out how bad things are in the movie as far as story.

For a production company like A24 who made one of my favorite movies, Ex Machina (I haven't watched this movie in a long time, but will get to it relatively soon), Oscar-award winning “The Whale,” “Moonlight,” and “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” I think I expected a better story being told. However, looking at the other movies they have made like “The Green Knight” you'll know that this was meant to be a weird movie.

My Rating

So my friend asked me to watch this movie because he wanted to see it after everyone was talking about and Rotten Tomatoes giving the entire series a “Certified Fresh” rating, whatever that means. So I did, not really knowing what it was about. I was pretty quickly aware of what was to come, but for an 1 hour and 46-minute movie, it took its time. Not a lot really happens for the first 2/3 of the movie and then “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once” the story presses forward. There are a couple jump scenes that are good and overall I do not think there is a lot of them. To quote what I told my friend,

This isn't a supernatural and creepy for that reason movie. This is more realistic creepy so it doesn't give you the "bump in the night" fear. More of "Who the fuck owns that home in the middle of nowhere" fear.

Overall, I was interested in knowing how it ends because I know there are 2 other movies out or about to come out. Without that knowledge, I am not sure if I would watch another one. Gore and gruesome for that sake with little pay or substance. It's a 6 of a movie.

Parental Rating

God could come down and tell them to watch it to save their lives, they would think it was really Satan (they'd be right in this instance), and die before watching this. Sex, gore, language, nudity, and extreme violence. Rejected a thousand times by both.
