Top Gear

Synopsis

A super car highlight show with three presenters that are ambitious, but rubbish in some of their attempts.

Review

This is either very boring show, or grossly entertaining. I like the beauty of cars. I used to have all the bedroom poster cars (Lamborghini, Ferrari, McLaren, etc.) downloaded to a folder on my computer when I was a kid and that was my screensaver. However, for the most part, I know I'll never afford one and so the 0-60 time is only interested when directly comparing it to another unattainable care in a direct fashion, I.e., a drag race. Which they do a lot of on the show so that I appreciate the differences between that and torque a lot more in visual manner. Otherwise, it is just numbers on paper.

I became aware of this show when I was stationed in Quantico and my roommate was watching it during dinner in the barracks. Having never seen it before, I happen to watch one of the episodes of them on their "Christmas Specials." Basically, they take different cars and have to traverse long distances/do different things in vehicles not designed to do those things. That is the show is the most fun. An example is them riding scooters across Vietnam and then having to turn them into water vehicles to find a floating bar. Or turning a vehicle into an Ambulance and then having to prove their choice was better to care for a patient and was faster.

This is where the three people, Jeremy, Richard, and James, really make the show entertaining. Yes, they are stubborn, opinionated, and sometimes frustrating/confrontational, which is what lead to Jeremy being fired from the show in 2015 and the others quitting. This action lead to the downfall of the show as ratings were terrible afterward and the show was ultimately cancelled a couple of years later (If you google for an image searching just Top Gear, the first image for the show and the one on IMDB is of the three of them. Not the new people). I honestly stopped watching after they leave as it is there personalities and friendship that made me watch it. These three went on to start [[The Grand Tour]] on Amazon Prime. However, these friends just messed with each other in stupid, but intelligent ways to really get under each other skin and really make compelling arguments for the vehicles they had chosen.

My Rating

I decided to rewatch this show with the announcement of the end of the Grand Tour. I find this show just great entertainment about something I am interested in, but for the most part of no experience with. My father-in-law understands more about the vehicles and the mechanics of what they are talking about and watching this game me something intelligent to say every once in a while when we were together. It gave me enough to understand something other than nothing. I find this show to be almost perfect. So it is a 9.

Parental Rating

My parents are big car people. So content wise, this isn't for them. There are some British curse words that are not curse words here, but would be considered rude said quite often. There is no sex, obviously, and the violence is typically from a horse. So based on the rules, Mom will reject as there is zero family content, and Dad would approve as the language is light-ish.
