Review
This is a fantastic movie. There is a wealth of people that played here that then took off. One of the primary power houses is a young Heath Ledger from The Dark Knight. He does so well in this and I really think he and Mel Gibson really feel like a father-son duo.
I know that this story is fake, pulling more from a real story of a sniper from the Civil War, but the way this is presented feels in line with some of the stories that came from the American Revolution. There was a brutality and anger from loyalist and colonist about whether or not to stay a part of the British Empire. Also, it is crazy that they were leaving over 2% tax or something like that, when I have that on my property tax alone.
The action is really good. Much like Air Force One where that was the first Rated "R" film I saw, this wasn't far behind. There are some outrageous scenes that surprised me and have sat in my brain for the 20 years since I have first watched this. The cannon ball scenes I feel are probably realistic, as I have always wondered if they would actually explode or if it was just the force of the impact did the damage.
My Rating
This is a really good movie. Even 20+ years later, I still enjoy it. Some of the kids are annoying, but overall I am not mad at the acting. It is fun to see some people like Jason Issac play another bad guy like in the Harry Potter Movie Series, Chris Cooper, Tom Wilkinson, and Tcheky Karyo just being absolute amazing players. I am going to give this an 8.
Parental Rating
This movie has a special place in my heart for what can go wrong in old films. It is here that my dad pointed out to continuity errors in the movie. The first is when Mel is shooting from the flank and there are paintball marks hitting the tree and then when they go back to the tree they are missing. The second is when he is running in the final battle, he has the pistol by the barrel, but then they shift and it is in his hand the correct way. So those things have always been in my head. Also, as a side note, this is also the movie that I learned how movies were edited for TBS/TNT. All the blood was made brown to look like mud on those channels. Speaking of that, there is a quite a bit of blood. Enough to make my mom say "Oh hell naw." There is no sex and the language is relatively limited to damns. Approved by Dad and Rejected by Mom.
