Squid Game

Synopsis

In South Korea, if you are strapped for cash, owe tons of money, you can play children's games for extreme amounts of money. The catch? You play against hundreds others and if you lose, you die from one of the game makers.

Review

This show starts off so crazy, but to that point, the entire show is crazy. From one season to the next to the next there is a ton of blood and death in very surprising ways. I know there is an argument for watching in Korean with subtitles, I always have to have subtitles on so having it in english means I can understand the context a bet more. Either way is fine.

So lets talk about the story. The weaponization of children's games is such a genius bad buy element. Human ego will tell you that "Oh yeah I can win a child's game." This show will give you a new way to think about that idea with introducing you into strategy. Think about tic-tac-toe. If you start in the middle, you are bound to lose. But if you start at the edge, you can play the opposite side and then combined corner and have 2 options forcing the win.

This game story is only the beginning with player 456 really making strides. Showing people what being a human really means. Lee Jung-jae is outstanding in this. I believe bad writing and him learning english for the role is why he was weaker in The Acolyte, but I don't think it is his capability.

My Rating

The best TV series that Netflix has ever released. 3 seasons of passion, fear, anguish, surprise, and straight up death. While I can't think of any others, you would be hard-pressed to find a show with more emotion. It starts well, it ends better, and I'll die on that hill. This is a 9.

Parental Rating

No sex? I think that might be the best thing this show has going if you ask my parents. There is a lot of language, and obviously a ton of blood and gore. There are a lot of crazy deaths and a couple of sad and graphic suicides. While I think they would enjoy the story, I think they both, mainly my mom, would be out fairly quickly. My dad might be able to watch it if it were in Korean, but he would never want to "read a movie." Approved by Dad and rejected by Mom.
