Phenomena

The Book in 1 Sentence

A historical review of the US Government's research into extra sensory perception, out-of-body experiences, mind reading, and other fringe science.

Brief Review

This was an interesting book that might make you think of the extra sensory whatever as being a trait long since lost or still floating around. However, what will be more intriguing is the amount of money and time that went into studying it for "Intelligence" purposes with little to show for it.

Why I Read this book

Since Operation Paperclip I have enjoyed the authors research and books.

In-Depth Review (Favorite Quotes)

This book is an intriguing read. Starting around WWII, this covers the entire history of the US Government's involvement, research, and attempt to bring remote viewing and ESP into the intelligence industry.

Real quick, ESP is Extra Sensory Perception which I feel is more of an overall term. There are also other techniques, that is what I am going to call it, called remote viewing, map dousing, and another one that I can't remember. Remote viewing is the idea of going to a remote location in an out-of-body experience. Map dousing, is using a pendulum to find a vibe basically. It gets a little squirrely for sure with that one.

I think overall, the history is interesting, but crazy. You basically have the same people involved for 30+ years. Some of them are those with a "gift," and others are just scientist. What really pushed this forward is the rumor that the Soviets were also looking into this. It is basically another Cold War without the ability to prove your winning, or that it works for the most part.

How my life / behavior / thoughts / ideas have changed as a result of reading the book

So I have been thinking a lot about this, especially after watching The Old Guard and The Old Guard 2. If you take away the mysticism of The Old Guard 2 and just think of it as a rare DNA artifact, you could see the plausibility of this book. Not immortality, which would be cool. What I am saying with this, which is a belief that some folks involved thought as well, is that what if there was a lingering DNA switch in the human genome that allows for this. I think there is enough historical evidence to say that SOME people have had SOME larger degree of being able to sense things beyond their 5 senses. From the Oracle of Delphi and just that Mom's can have that their kid is in trouble. Is it possible? Sure. Is it likely? No. If it did exist, then we unknowingly bred it out.

Rating

The book is well written really, as they all are. It does get VERY repetitive as the same people are trying to do the same thing without any changes of process or technique. I think it is worth the read, but it will take a bit to get through. I'm giving it a 6.
