Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Synopsis

Frodo continues to struggle under the affects of the ring while following Gollum to Mordor. The rest of the fellowship stands against the Orcs sent from the White Wizard.

Review

Just like the previous movie, I watched the extended version of this movie. I think this one has very scenes that extend and help the movie as compared to the last one, but for the readers I am sure these scenes are very important.

The battle for Helm's Deep is one of the coolest scenes you will ever watch. I also appreciate the build up to it. The elves showing up, the break in fighting to show Frodo and Sam's journey are masterful in story telling and pacing. Also, we should mention that this movie did the first Day time/Night Time filming. They did it right. You can clearly see the actions that are happening, unlike Game of Thrones and The House of the Dragon which made it almost impossible to see.

I also think that this scene and movie series in general show the importance of practical affects. There is a story of John Rhys-Davies when doing the choreography with the Orcs, and he didn't have a half speed or a non-hit speed. He would swing as hard as he could during these scenes. I bring this up, because the first orc to come up the ladder gets molly-walloped in the… stones… by Davies and I like to believe that it was a legit hit and not a CGI or half hit.

The acting is still so awesome. Again all the cast really makes the effort to dive into their characters. You can tell they cared about this project.

My Rating

This movie is more story telling than action, and it is my least favorite of the three. It's slower, with peaks of action rather than the steady drum of the first one. It's good, its enjoyable, its worth the watch. Likewise, it is just a 7.

Parental Rating

I think the violence here is more gruesome than the first movie. It is more personal than the previous one. There is still no nudity and limited language. However, just like The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring my parents have no desire to watch fantasy movies so much so that they won't watch this. Plus again, 4 hours long. Rejected by both.
