Lethal Weapon

Synopsis

Two cops are paired together from completely opposite ends of the spectrum of styles. They are there fight some drug smugglers, but end up being the classic buddy comedy.

Review

I wasn't kidding when I said that they are the classic buddy comedy. When people joke about it, this is what we all think about at this point. Well at least I fairly confident that my generation does.

It is an 80s action film. The Special Forces were still completely masked in secrecy, because every other SEAL hadn't written a book yet, and they use the mystery well. This creates some great action scenes between people. There are for sure some impossible shots that happen and the entire counter sniper scene where the trade is supposed to happen makes so little sense, but it is entertaining.

This movie is funny. I think it might be funnier than intended 40 years later. The jokes are still good, the story is still an issue, and there is a level of silliness that I think the world could move back to without losing itself. I think watching it now, it doesn't take itself too seriously, but I don't think that was the intention back then.

My Rating

This is a classic. The story is layered, a bit too much at times, and fills the movie. The final fight scene just goes on way to long for anyone to care for at this point. Its like 3–5 minutes too long of two dudes wrestling in the mud. The nostalgia and ripple effect of this movie's protagonist line "I'm too old for this shit" into everything including an episode of How I Met Your Mother is why this is getting an 8. It is a solid film.

Parental Rating

Lots of language, some red food dye and scenes of torture, and nudity. The family element is a trope more than plot. So if we count up the issues on our hand, 1 + 1 + 1 + 1, we will see that this equals a rejected by both statement for this movie.
