Die Trying

The Book in 1 Sentence

The most likely scenario if a Militia were to attempt to get their way except Jack Reacher.

Brief Review

I read this and honestly was more surprised by how plausible it could be with some notable exceptions as compared to others. There are a lot of things that would stop someone like Jack from helping with an investigation like in the first book, but not much would stop someone from trying to escape.

Why I Read this book

Continuing the series of course.

In-Depth Review (Favorite Quotes)

I am not going to lie, I read this book back in March and didn't write the review. So while doing some administrative cleanup and some coding, I found this left stagnant.

I mentioned this in the brief review, but this is much more plausible than Reacher's Killing Floor. That is where this book does something very well. Just this idea of attempting to escape. There is a lot more of this book in my memory about the FBI agents side as compared to just anecdotal information like the previous and following books from other characters. However, that makes sense in this book speaking that Jack is pretty much just captured the whole time.

There were not a lot of characters that bothered me in their portrayals as either too forced or too blasé. Jack is of course surround by plot armor, but It wasn't terribly.

The setting is actually something that really made me wonder if these militia's could be so widespread and domineering in small towns. Most of my education about extremist groups or more extreme political groups is about Middle Eastern groups, so my knowledge of American grown Militias is pretty limited. However, I don't see where this story taking place as much of a stretch as it might feel at times.

Rating

I gave this book a 7, which doesn't feel wrong to me after 6 months and pulling this from memory. The book was entertaining and the more I work to remember it, I can pull a scene where Jack is in a narrow cave and unable to move and feeling that. I am a broad-shouldered individual and have been stuck or at least felt stuck in small holes during boot camp and that panic is something you have to fight. The written description brought me back there and so kudos to Lee Child for that. A good 7.
