Captain America The First Avenger

Synopsis

A kid rejected by the Army during WWII is selected to take part in an experiment that turns him into a Super-solider. However, his new strength puts him in harms way as he goes after Hydra.

Review

This was probably my least favorite movie in phase 1 and as I am watching 14 years later, it does a great job of holding up. The CGI looks good, the action is good, it isn't too cartoony, and the story is excellent. It still is a little slow. It is actually the movie that set my standard that I don't enjoy origin stories. There is too much exposition in the beginning which drags the story a bit. In my opinion.

Chris Evan should be applauded for his more grown up role in the Marvel world. From The Human Torch, to Captain America. Hell of a glow up. Hugo Weaving honestly is my favorite part of this movie. He is so deep in the role that you believe exactly who he says he is.

For being a comic book movie, what this does really well is grounds the supernatural/alien technology. It feels like a country that happened to be a bit further ahead like the US with the atomic bomb rather than a godlike character and force wiping out the world like we expect Galactus to do in The Fantastic Four First Steps.

My Rating

This is an interesting movie in the fact that it very much feels like it got better. Maybe that is because we have had horrible Marvel movies recently with Captain America Brave New World being only halfway decent and Thunderbolts* being the movie pulling it out of the dumps. This was a 6 for me when I first watched it. Today it is a 7. It is just slow and while I appreciate what they are trying to setup, it hurts the pacing. I could see the argument for more, but at the moment, this is where I stand.

Parental Rating

What isn't there to like? No blood other than a couple scraps. If you die, you just teleport away. Language is non-existent. And there is no sex. This back in the day when Marvel and Disney hid sexual content under the guise of "Dancing." Either way, this is a movie they would both enjoy. My mom wouldn't watch it on her own, but she would enjoy it if she watched it with Dad. Approved by both.
