Brief Review

Using some incredible imagery and graphic horror, this story of the a Knight surviving during the Black Plague and protecting a young girl who is more than she appears. Whether demon or angel, the girl seems to know more and has a plan for the Knight Thomas and protecting the people of France.

Why I Read this book

I am not sure where I found this book, but I think it was reading reviews for the Ordination that I saw the comparison and I wanted to see what it was about.

In-Depth Review (Favorite Quotes)

This book was incredible for the imagery created alone. There was just an this incredible metaphors to what could have been seen and may be how they tried to explain the immense death that occurred. I know that it wasn't, as this was written in 2012, but it very much could have been the way the Church really put spins on things.

Initially I had an issue with Thomas. Part of that was really because of how tightly the story from Ordination really was beat for beat the same. Annoyingly so. However, the first description of the party that wasn't a party, changed the book entirely. The detail in this that is constantly presented made this go from a run-of-the-mill fantasy book to something so much more. There is a scene in the book where the team is in Paris and at night the town is terrified of something that comes at night. The fight that goes down was so well done that I could and still can see it.

Thomas is good. His character growth is paced well and really provides a realistic passage of a real person in the time. Dalphine on the other hand just feels like a ploy. I didn't mind her, but there is a lot of plot armor around her, which is explained at the end, but it doesn't make sense during the book.

Rating

I really enjoyed this book. The heavy Christian imagery and the metaphors are so good. I can see the inspirational paintings from classic painters. I can hear the passages from Revelations that are called on. It is very well written. I need to say something quickly though. While this book is well written and an entertaining read, there is a lot of dark content. From necrophilia, to sexual assault, homosexuality, and intense vulgarity and violence. The biggest issue with the book itself is the ending. It drags. I sat about 2 hours from the end for a week because I just couldn't get myself to finishing this book. I had lost interest with the stupidity of the ending. However, the final sections were good, just drawn out. I'm giving this an 8.
