Review

What a show. Also, what a smattering of people of are now big names, but then were not well known. James McAvoy from Split, Michael Fassbender from Black Bag and Prometheus, and Tom Hardy from The Dark Knight Rises. Yes, you had what's his face from Friends, Donnie Wahlberg, and Damian Lewis, but those were big names then. This who show is full of big names then and now.

The show, for being based on a true story, is VERY well told. However, as far as entertainment value, the attention to detail means that it is a little slow at times. Slow enough that my wife wasn't able to get into it. Typically, she is all for true stories, but this was just drawn out at times and others were just really sad telling stories that are important to the people, but doesn't help the story move forward. I feel sacrilegious saying that, but some of the people we spend time with in an episode, only for them to not show up ever again and never to be mentioned. I think it tells the fragility of people during the war, but it just doesn't tell a good tv show. This is more clear when you look at similar shows today.

One of the things this production group does well is make you feel like you are in the same place as they were during the war. To the point that I am curious if they did record in location, especially the little towns.

My Rating

I like this show. It is well produced, well edited, well acted, and full of action. It is just slow. Too slow at times. I know when it first came out, the pacing was pretty on par with what was coming out at the time. However, in a world with Fury, Hacksaw Ridge, and The Town, you can see that action can tell the story as much as someone repeating it to you via voiceover. I think back when I first watched it, I would have given it a 9. Today, it is an 8. I know someone is going to shoot me for that.

Parental Rating

The amount of blood and visceral is going to make Mom's stomach turn. There is also a lot of language that will drive my dad away. As good as this is, it is going to be rejected by both.
