Babylon

The Book in 1 Sentence

A boring history, minus a couple late chapters, of where Babylon came from and what it gave to the world.

Brief Review

I am not 100% sure I remember anything from this book even though I finished it yesterday. It was a lot like SPQR A History of Ancient Rome where it was very academic. I do not think I was really interested until "Chapter" 8.

Why I Read this book

Babylon had/has one of the ancient wonders of the world. The Hanging Gardens. I was hoping to learn more about that and what made that and its people.

In-Depth Review (Favorite Quotes)

This book spends more time talking about the people who came before Babylon and what made up it's language than actually talking about Babylon. I think in general it is relatively interesting, but I can't tell you anything about the book other than some Biblical references match known history.

On the flip side, I also learned that there archeological evidence of the area shows a flood and their history predates the biblical history of the great flood. I don't know it was confusing at times honestly. The fact that both groups have a great flood is very cool.

I also learned there was the first record of a centurion in that time. From both a biographical sense and a journal talking about the same person who was over 100 years old. Much like Ikigai, it is intriguing that someone back then lived so long without the knowledge of germ theory or modern medicine.

Rating

You just read the most of what I remember from the book. That is it. It is highly subjective to whom might find it interesting and that wasn't me. It was well written and did a good job of talking about those who found it and those that lived it, but it wasn't for me. I am giving it a 5.
